Hockey & Fall Engagement Session in Toronto | Activity-Based Engagement Ideas for Couples
Toronto gives us something truly special when it comes to engagement sessions — seasons that completely transform the feeling of your images.
Amy and Aaron chose to do two engagement sessions. One during Fall and the other in Winter. Both with hockey woven into the heart of it all.
And honestly? It made perfect sense for them.
Why Do Two Engagement Sessions in Toronto?
One of the beautiful things about living in Toronto is that every season feels completely different.
Fall in Toronto brings layers of colour, texture, and warmth. Winter gives you softness, closeness, and that quiet cinematic feeling snow naturally creates. Instead of trying to fit everything into one session, splitting it into two allowed their story to unfold differently each time.
Each session was about an hour long, which is usually the sweet spot. It gives couples enough time to warm up to the camera, settle into the experience, and eventually forget we’re even there.
That’s usually when the magic happens.
Why Activity-Based Engagement Sessions Work So Well
Especially if you feel a little camera shy.
Having something to do during a session changes everything. Instead of focusing on posing perfectly, you’re immersed in an experience together. You naturally interact. You laugh more. You lean into each other without thinking about it.
That’s why activity-based engagement sessions work beautifully.
For Amy and Aaron, hockey wasn’t just a theme added onto the shoot for aesthetics. It was genuinely part of who they are together.
And that matters.
Because when your engagement session reflects your actual life, it stops feeling like dress-up and starts feeling meaningful.
I’ll usually help set the stage and create little scenarios to get things rolling, but the best moments always happen when couples lean into the activity naturally and make it their own.
The Importance of Wearing Clothes That Feel Like You
One of the most overlooked parts of engagement sessions is wardrobe.
Not because clothing needs to be extravagant — but because it should feel authentic.
The Fall portion naturally leaned into textured outfits and earthy tones that complemented the foliage around them. Then they swapped into hockey sweaters, which instantly tied both sessions together emotionally.
That consistency mattered.
At the core of both sessions was the game they loved.
The clothing simply helped support that story visually.
Best Locations for a Fall Engagement Session in Toronto
Fall engagement sessions in Toronto can honestly be as simple as finding an area with beautiful foliage and soft walking trails.
The key is less about finding the most famous location and more about finding a place that complements the feeling you want.
For the hockey portion, we found an indoor rink that allowed private ice time for the couple. That gave us freedom to really lean into the experience without distractions.
And this is where themes become incredibly fun.
The environment, wardrobe, movement, and playfulness all started working together naturally.
Not every activity has to be done perfectly either.
Amy was not exactly ice-skate savvy — which honestly made it sweeter. Aaron naturally slipped into attentive fiancé mode the entire time. Tying her laces. Guiding her across the ice. Playing around her protectively.
And of course… the ice kisses were an added bonus for staying warm.
Those are the things that make images memorable.
Not perfection. Sweet in between Connections!
Weather Tips for Fall Engagement Sessions in Toronto
Weather is always something to keep an eye on during Fall sessions in Toronto.
Cloudy, overcast or sunny all work better for this scenario.
Overcast skies lean more towards moodier images.
Sunny evenings create warmth and glow.
Even light rain can become romantic if you embrace it.
The biggest thing is flexibility and trusting the process a little.
Toronto weather likes keeping us humble.
Behind the Scenes From Our Side
As for us, I spent the majority of the hockey portion balancing on pieces of carpet while photographing on the ice trying not to completely wipe out, while Michael handled all the technical bits behind the scenes.
Somewhere between all of that, is usually where we quietly bring a couple’s story to life.
Why Meaningful Engagement Sessions Matter
The best engagement sessions are never really just about the photos.
They become little time capsules of who you were before the wedding day — what you loved, how you moved together, and what mattered during this season of life.
That’s what Amy and Aaron created here.
Not just engagement photos, but images rooted in something real.
